Mayfield Tour Starts Friday March 25th at Eighth and Rail

Sunday, March 20th, 2011
Birmingham rocker Matthew Mayfield is proud to announce the release of his first full-length solo album, Now You’re Free, on April 5, 2011 on Sweet Exchange Records.  A tour of the south, including residencies in Atlanta, Nashville, and Charlotte, has been confirmed to begin on March 25th in Opelika, Alabama.
Matthew Mayfield thought his musical career was off to a tremendous start after signing with Epic Records in 2005. After releasing one album on a major label with his band Moses Mayfield in the early part of 2007, he quickly realized things weren’t going to be as easy as he’d hoped.  “We spent lots of their money making a big record, opening big tours, and believing big promises.  The wheels eventually fell off, and we realized this isn’t about overnight success.  You have to work your ass off just to get by. You have to keep paying your dues and keep paying your dues and keep paying your dues,” Mayfield says.
In 2008, Matthew Mayfield broke out on his own, recording and releasing no less than 7 EP’s in just under 3 years.  He recorded the albums at home, and toured when he could in his car, but the music was pouring out of him and the EP’s kept his fans interested — and coming back for more. His latest EP, 2010’s Matthew Mayfield & The Blue Cut Robbery went to #1 on the iTunes Singer-Songwriter charts.  Grey’s Anatomy even came calling on occasion, using 2 tracks from his collection of EP’s in episodes in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
In May of 2010, Mayfield had 30 songs he still hadn’t recorded.  To make his new album, Now You’re Free, Matthew raised $14,000 via Pledge Music by selling handwritten lyrics, living room demos, studio artifacts, drumheads, guitar heads, etc. – to his fans.
This is a true DIY story – and it’s just the beginning.

Pre-Sundilla Activities

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

The pre-Sundilla concert: Jim Scott and James Durst will be performing this Thursday, Jan. 6, 7 p.m. EASTERN time at the Fredonia Community Clubhouse, 6150 Co. Rd. 222, Lanett, AL.  This will be the first concert for what could be a regular series in the area, and a good crowd would help them AND Sundilla. With the troubled economy, our low admission (possibly the LOWEST admission prices among similar venues in the country) and dwindling attendance, performers are finding it harder and harder to justify coming to Sundilla unless they have some additional gigs in the area to help defray expenses. And yes, this IS affecting who we can book– and re-book– so until things get turned in the right direction, series’ like the one in Lanett might be what keeps Sundilla alive.

Gerry O’Beirne – Sundilla Friday Night

Friday, November 5th, 2010

One final reminder that Sundilla’s final concert of 2010 will take place tonight, when we welcome Gerry O’Beirne back to the stage. Showtime is 7:30, and admission is just $10, $8 for students, $8 for season-pass holders, and free for children 12 and under. We’ll have free coffee, tea, water, food and heat (the forecast is calling for a chilly night; not as cold as the night the 2010 season opened, but chilly nonetheless) and as always you are invited to bring whatever food or beverage you prefer. (more…)

Opelika Saturday Night – Research Project Continues

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Pub Profile - Jerry KatzWell, apparently it a weekend for research.  My Saturday mornings are not the same with the departure of Red Door June.  I wish the best to Rick and Karen, hoping they realize how much many of us appreciate their efforts with the shop.  I’m probably feeling the same loss that the gentlemen that would hold court at Tyler’s each morning felt on its closure.  I actually had to make coffee, which I put in a travel mug, grabbed my computer, ran by Burger King for a breakfast sandwich and met Redman at Sid’s outdoor courtyard for breakfast.  That was about 9:30 and “no”, Sid’s wasn’t open.  I almost have to get out of the house every other Saturday, as I can’t stand to see Christine (aka cleaning lady and friend) throw away all of those precious cans and bottles collected from the previous 14 days.

With that being said, I just hung around Sid’s and surfed the internet for several hours.  Thinking it was  time to just go home  (to a clean home) and there’s Redman calling “A group was gathering at the Pub for Alabama Football”.  The game watching is pretty good there, so we made it thru the game and several trains that came by.  Can you say “Train Shot?”

After heading back to the house, my reporters notebook was out of paper, and a quick shower and change of clothes, it was back to IBP for the Auburn first half.  It seemed a bit cooler, so the return visit was on foot.  Second half at Eighth and Rail, then some Blues of John Bull before calling it a very long day of research.   Short of this post, I’m probably finished the weekend investigation. Some Nascar at  home and a nap (normally at the same time) is on today’s schedule.
