Downtown Opelika get’s it own German resturant this past week with the opening of the Alpen Cafe & Bakery. The Menu shows Appetizers, Soups & Salads, Entrees, Sandwiches and more. The Cafe is billed as a place for traditional Bavarian & Alpine Cuisine featuring the freshest ingredients at reasonable prices. Buddy Hiro had dinner the other night and said it was a lot of food for the price. In fact, I think he said he was full, and friends would tell you they’ve never heard that from Hiro before.
Here’s the important stuff: The hours are Tuesday thry Thursday from 11AM til 8PM, Friday and Saturday from 11AM till 9PM and Sunday Brunch from 10AM til 2PM. The Cafe is located at 913 South Railroad Avenue (That’s the location of Martha’s place). Here’s the number 334-705-0111. Pick up a menu for Dine In or Carry Out.

We had dinner there last night. It was as Hiro commented, ” a lot of food.” The good thing in that is the food was excellent as well. The German salad is a trifecta of slaw, potato salad, and green bean salad which is served with every entree. The schnitzel and wurst platters were excellent. The owner gave us a “sample” of the Sacher cake which turned out to be a large piece of fine chocolate cake which my wife, a self confessed cake hater, ate most of with relish. I hope they do well and everyone takes the opportunity to support this new restaurant. Octoberfest anyone?

The Sunday Brunch is a steal for the quality and amount of food served. Everything is homemade…it has been a long time since I’ve had such a delicous, and filling meal!
