Opelika’s APR Races Today

Friday, January 28th, 2011
Ryan Ellis of VW TDI Cup Fame Puts APR Motorsport and VW’s GTI MK6 On Pole at the GRAND-AM 200 and Sets New ST Class Track Record at Daytona Speedway
APR Motorsport is pleased to present Ryan Ellis as our newest record setting driver in the ST class of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. Ryan hails from VW’s TDI Cup driver development program where he accomplished 2 wins, 2 poles and was a leader in 4 other races. The GRAND-AM 200 is only Ryan’s second professional race and his first since completing the 2010 season in VW’s TDI Cup.
Ryan was able to progressively improve his lap times during Thursday’s practice session as he became acclimated to 2.0 TSI power plant in the GTI’s. “Stepping into APR Motorsport’s #171 GTI and getting up to speed was not as difficult as I feared it would be. The transition from the TDI Cup Jetta’s was very smooth and I am very excited about tomorrow’s race, Go APR!”, Ellis commented.
APR Motorsport was also able to achieve a good first outing for the 2011 season in their GS class Audi S4. APR driver Gary Gibson was able to position the #91 Audi in the middle of the pack despite a minor suspension parts failure that kept him from achieving his best times during qualifying. “Making the move from prototypes to production based cars was initially a point of concern for me. However, fantastic sponsors like perfectpedal.com and the maturity of the APR team has made me feel part of the family already and I feel really good about tomorrow’s race.”, Gary relayed in the paddock after qualifying.

Colorful cast of characters at Michigan International Speedway

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

LaurieWe’ve been talking among the staff about how great the MIS Staff is.  From our arrival in the staging area to our third day here.  Well, now it’s time to say thanks and Happy Birthday to Laurie.  Freinds posted a little “It’s my Birthday Sign” on her golfcart, unknown to her.  So those random “Happy Birthday’s” I’m sure were a surprise.  You know me, I had to grab a photo with the birthday girl.  Happy Birthday Laurie from the ODN staff.

Can Head at Michigan International SpeedwayThen of course there’s Can Head who was wandering the campground showing his unique ability to sick a can or bottle of beer to his head. And at this point, we’ve managed to catch two races, plus the Natiowide on TV this evening.  The weather has been good to us and looks like it will be okay for the Sunday race.  I’ll have more from the Speedway in coming days.

Arrived Michigan International Speedway

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Well, the entire staff is in place here at MIS.  Woke to the sound of the Jet Dryers on the track this morning after some rain around 2AM.  In case you wonder where old school busses go, apparently Michigan, where one of of five fans is driving one.  Okay, maybe not that many, but we’ll grab pictures to some some of the best and worst of the group.  You may wonder why people in the world can’t get along, because if they were all Nascar fans, then there would be no problems.  I show some pictures to show you what I mean about that as well.  Buddy Kim is cooking breakfast, and then it’s off to the vendor trailers.

Sidenote:  We were in the lineup to get into the In Field yesterday for a few hours before they opened the track.  I’m not sure how they got us in so quickly and orderly, but they did.  I even got a golf cart escort to my site for setup.  I see why so many fans love this place.

ODN Staff Off to Michigan International Speedway

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Okay, just forgive me, but it’s back to Nascar this weekend for the entire editorial staff of the Opelika Daily News (aka ODN)  The ODN GMC Sierra will top off with Sunoco fuel and travel the 800 miles thru Alabama,  Tennessee,  Illinois,  Ohio and Michigan to set up shop in our version of the TV Hollywood Hotel.   So, reporting from our Jayco Feather Lite Sport, we’ll have pictures, cooking, camping and racing.  We’ll cover two races from the Infield Camping at Turn Two, then to the Stands for the HelluvaGood 400. First stop on the trek is Cave City, KY.  See you then…

A Really Big Bar B Que in Opelika – APR Annual Event

APR Annual Bar B Que Logo for 2009When I first saw the APR building go up on the road to Alex City I just figured it was another part supplier for Korean auto makers.  Well, part of that is true, because APR is doing “Performance Parts” for cars, but not ones built as Korean.  Audi, Volkswagon and Porche are the parts they build and it makes an already great car, even greater.  Can I say that?  Each year, they have a little get together and invite folks (customers) down for some good eating, a tour of the facility and a look at what the APR Racing division is going to put on the track next year.   That picture is the Audi getting the cover removed.  I got to ride in it when they moved it from the tent area to another display area.  And because of that, I was only one of a few that saw the inside of the car.  I understand there was a 60 car convoy of VW’s and Audi’s on the road down from Atlanta.    Racing for the team doesn’t begin until about two week before the Daytona 500.  And I’ve discovered some subtle differences between this racing and NASCAR.  However, these cars also have to run with Sunco gas.

Zoot to Nascar Jacket

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

The Race JacketIt was the second race of the season, so I decided at the very last minute to run over and catch the first part of the California race at BW3.  They have the race on the Big Screen and you can watch some of the Driver Cars on other sets. I followed the “88″ car.  Unfortunately, the first of the race was lots of caution, however, but the time I had made it home for the finish, it was a good race, to have Matt Kenseth win the race, and the second for the season.
