Rosemere Cemetery Recieves History Award

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

Cemetery AwardThe Alabama Historical Commission (AHC) recently added Rosemere Cemetery in Opelika to the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register.

“The cemetery register is a prestigious listing of historic cemeteries in Alabama,” said Lee Anne Wofford, cemetery program coordinator.  “The AHC considers the notable historic cemeteris in this register to be particularly worthy of preservation and appreciation, and therefore, deserving of this special recognition.”

There are now four cemeteries in Lee County listed on the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register, which features 388 cemeteries statewide.

Rosemere Cemetery dates to 1854 and contains over 5550 marked and approximately 500 unmarked burials. Many notable Lee County citizens are buried here including Alabama Governor William James Samford (1844-1901); Sheldon Lyne Toomer (1872-1957), founder of Toomer Drug Company in Auburn; baseball legend Billy Hitchcock (1916-2006); and many other national, state, and local leaders. Veterans of the Spanish American War, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, Korean and Vietnam Wars are buried here. Also present in the cemetery is the c. 1916 structure built by the City of Opelika as a ladies’ restroom. (more…)

Recycling Drop-off Center at Miles Thomas Field Moved

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

The City of Opelika has moved the recycling drop-off center at Miles Thomas Field over to the Denson Drive Recreation Center (now called the Denson Drive Community Center), located at 1102 Denson Drive.  A trailer with multiple compartments will be used to collect items, instead of the “igloos” used at the Miles Thomas fields.  The same materials will be collected:  glass, cardboard, newspaper, steel cans, aluminum cans and plastic containers.

The City of Opelika requests that plastic bags not be placed in the plastic containers bins.  Unfortunately, plastic bags are not the type of “recyclable plastic” the city can send off with the other plastic products.  They can, however, be returned to Kroger, Winn Dixie or Wal-Mart shopping centers, which all have plastic bag “drop off” areas.

For more information on recycling call KEEP OPELIKA BEAUTIFUL offices at (334) 749-4970.

City of Opelika Mourns the Loss of Dr. William Lazenby

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010
The City of Opelika officials were shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Dr. William Lazenby following an accident at his home on Monday evening, June 14th.
Opelika Police Officers responded to the residence of Dr. William Lazenby upon receiving a call from Mrs. Peggy Lazenby after she became concerned that he had not returned to the house as it grew dark.  He had been mowing the family’s acreage.  Dr. Lazenby was located at approximately 9:30 p.m.  It appeared that his lawn mower had turned over on top of him.
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden death of Dr. William Lazenby,” stated Mayor Gary Fuller, “not only was he an excellent member of the Opelika City Council since being elected to that office in October of 2000, he was an outstanding citizen, husband, father, and grandfather.  He leaves a legacy of outstanding contributions to our medical community, support for Opelika City Schools, and the growth and success of East Alabama Medical Center.  He will be greatly missed.”
Opelika City Council President, Eddie Smith added, “On behalf of the Opelika City Council, my colleagues and I extend our sincere condolences to Peggy and the entire Lazenby family.  We are devastated by the loss of Dr. Lazenby and the City of Opelika will never be the same after losing this fine ambassador, gentlemen, and friend.”

On a personal note:  Dr. Lazenby and I had served on the Keep Opelika Beautiful board  together.   He’s always been one to be involved in the community to levels greater than many people will ever know.   He loved his family, and also loved the city and it’s people in a special way.  He will me missed.  I’m glad that I was able to meet one of the good guys along the way.
