Opelika Saturday Night – Research Project Continues

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Pub Profile - Jerry KatzWell, apparently it a weekend for research.  My Saturday mornings are not the same with the departure of Red Door June.  I wish the best to Rick and Karen, hoping they realize how much many of us appreciate their efforts with the shop.  I’m probably feeling the same loss that the gentlemen that would hold court at Tyler’s each morning felt on its closure.  I actually had to make coffee, which I put in a travel mug, grabbed my computer, ran by Burger King for a breakfast sandwich and met Redman at Sid’s outdoor courtyard for breakfast.  That was about 9:30 and “no”, Sid’s wasn’t open.  I almost have to get out of the house every other Saturday, as I can’t stand to see Christine (aka cleaning lady and friend) throw away all of those precious cans and bottles collected from the previous 14 days.

With that being said, I just hung around Sid’s and surfed the internet for several hours.  Thinking it was  time to just go home  (to a clean home) and there’s Redman calling “A group was gathering at the Pub for Alabama Football”.  The game watching is pretty good there, so we made it thru the game and several trains that came by.  Can you say “Train Shot?”

After heading back to the house, my reporters notebook was out of paper, and a quick shower and change of clothes, it was back to IBP for the Auburn first half.  It seemed a bit cooler, so the return visit was on foot.  Second half at Eighth and Rail, then some Blues of John Bull before calling it a very long day of research.   Short of this post, I’m probably finished the weekend investigation. Some Nascar at  home and a nap (normally at the same time) is on today’s schedule.

InfieldRush

Shortly after arrival in Michigan, the track infield opened for those of us waiting. I’d only been there a few hours, but others had been there for days.  It’s was very organized and the MIS staff did a great job.  I’ve posted some new pictures in the flickr feed in the sidebar, so go there, click a picture and review the Michigan Internation Speedway – June 2010 Picture.

Coming This Week ~ The MIS Busses

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

I’ve been gathering pictures of the many busses of Michigan International Sppedway.  I’ll have a photo album coming when we get back to the Editorial offices.  But, to get your interest, here’s one…

Michigan Race Weekend - June 2010 021

Friday at Michigan International Speedway

Friday, June 11th, 2010

So, lots of pictures and stories at the Speedway today.  Running out of time tonight to post, because I need to shut down the generator.  And we’ll celebrate a birthday of a MIS Staffer and her friend Dick.  More on that later.  Sorry, we’ve had a busy day and just ran out of time.  The race today was great fun. Check back over the weekend. All is good!

Arrived Michigan International Speedway

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Well, the entire staff is in place here at MIS.  Woke to the sound of the Jet Dryers on the track this morning after some rain around 2AM.  In case you wonder where old school busses go, apparently Michigan, where one of of five fans is driving one.  Okay, maybe not that many, but we’ll grab pictures to some some of the best and worst of the group.  You may wonder why people in the world can’t get along, because if they were all Nascar fans, then there would be no problems.  I show some pictures to show you what I mean about that as well.  Buddy Kim is cooking breakfast, and then it’s off to the vendor trailers.

Sidenote:  We were in the lineup to get into the In Field yesterday for a few hours before they opened the track.  I’m not sure how they got us in so quickly and orderly, but they did.  I even got a golf cart escort to my site for setup.  I see why so many fans love this place.

ODN Staff Off to Michigan International Speedway

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Okay, just forgive me, but it’s back to Nascar this weekend for the entire editorial staff of the Opelika Daily News (aka ODN)  The ODN GMC Sierra will top off with Sunoco fuel and travel the 800 miles thru Alabama,  Tennessee,  Illinois,  Ohio and Michigan to set up shop in our version of the TV Hollywood Hotel.   So, reporting from our Jayco Feather Lite Sport, we’ll have pictures, cooking, camping and racing.  We’ll cover two races from the Infield Camping at Turn Two, then to the Stands for the HelluvaGood 400. First stop on the trek is Cave City, KY.  See you then…

Nascar – Great Fun!

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

It was one of those, Green, White, Checkered races again this weekend.  And, a big wreck that looked to be intentional that called for a second restart.  I’ve headed back to the campground to spend the night, before heading back toward Griffin, then down Georgia 16 to I-85.  A quick stop at the Alabama Visitor’s Center (I have some stuff for them), then home and back in the office by Noonish.  Camping is truely the best way to enjoy a Nascar weekend. God Bless America!
