AFNI Adopts a Mile

Keep Opelika Beautiful is proud to announce an addition to the Adopt-A-Mile program. Afni, located at 1000 Jeter Avenue, has adopted the mile along Jeter Avenue in front of their business.

Opening in January 2001, Afni employs over 500 employees, making it a top employer in Opelika. Afni’s Human Resource Manager, Kirstin Willis says “Through community involvement, we are able to give back to the area we all live and work, build a trust and partnership amongst our neighboring businesses and leadership and hope to maintain a lasting foundation to continue and grow our own organization.” The company is also invovled in March of Dimes, Red Cross, LifeSouth and assist with toy drives and food drives during the holiday season.

Afni joins several other civic clubs and organizations in the Adopt-A-Mile program. It is a litter prevention program sponsored by Keep Opelika Beautiful, Inc. in the City of Opelika to attract public involvement in picking up litter along the streets. Sponsors of the program agree to a minimum of four cleanups over a period of one year, with one of them coinciding with Keep Opelika Beautiful’s Citywide Cleanup.

Boy Scouts Help with Project

Well, when you’re ready to take the tree down this year you’ve got a couple of choices. You can haul it over to the Opelika Chamber of Commerce Parking lot now, or wait for Saturday Morning, when you can swap it for a tree seedling. Keep Opelika Beautiful and the Opelika Tree Commission along with other volunteers will gather the trees on Saturday. Some will be ground to mulch, while others will become feeding areas in local lakes. The official project time is Saturday, 9AM til 2PM.

In the final count, it was a big success as over 400 trees were collected even with rain in the area!
