On Saturday, February 26th, beginning at 9 a.m. a long standing tradition in Opelika continues with the celebration of Arbor Day with one minor “change”. This family fun happening takes place this year at Opelika’s Sportsplex & Aquatics Center, instead of the Courthouse Square, as the Opelika Tree Commission and Keep Opelika Beautiful team up to put the event together.

Activities for the morning include sorts of kid-friendly activities, including having their pictures taken with Smokey Bear, tomato seed planting fun (which kids can take home with them) and learning about how to grow things and the kind of care to take when planting trees, shrubs and plants of all kinds. Kids will also be able to get a “tree tattoo” placed on their hands (these are washable tattoos, Mom!) and take home pencils from the event.

Other activities include the official announcement of the poster contest winners from submissions from schools, the presentation of the “Tree City Award”, a tree planting demonstration on everything from preparing your soil, the size of hole to dig and the care of newly planted trees.

And then, at 11 a.m. the Opelika Tree Commission and Keep Opelika Beautiful will team up to give away tree seedlings (while they last) to anyone who would like to have one for their home or business area. (Source: City of opelika)

The Opelika Tree Commission will be hosting its annual Arbor Day Activities on Saturday, February 28th, between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at Courthouse Square in downtown Opelika.  The morning’s activities will begin at 9:00 a.m. with children’s activities, which includes having pictures made with Smokey the Bear. During the festivities there will be a tree planting demonstration, followed by the Tree Commission’s annual “tree give away”. This year the Tree Commission will be giving away: 200 Red maples, 200 Chinese Fringe trees, 200 Autumn Olive trees, 200 Cherrybark oak trees, 200 Live Oak trees. Weather could be a factor on Saturday!  Lots of rain on the radar!

It was a little cool and breezy, which probably kept the kids away from Opelika’s celebration of Arbor day. Mayor Fuller join KOB Director Shirley Flora and others at the event this morning.
