It’s been a rough week regarding taxes and the Obama selections this past week. It’s been unfortunate that several members of his cabinet discovered problems with their taxes. So let me go ahead and advise the White House not to call me, as I’ve had some issues in my past as well. Like the Obama appointees, I’ve paid my debt and penalties years ago. And I wonder, would that make me a better or worse appointee? I think sometimes the experience of crossing the IRS gives you knowledge you might never get any other way. Now, with that being said, do you think that those in Congress, both Democrates and Republican’s would like a review of their past 5 or 10 years of taxes. I suspect the list might grow on both sides of the party! You know those guys with the bucks know more ways to avoid taxes than we do the little guy. I Report, You Decide! We are a flawed society!

How true is that! The fact that the guy heading up the IRS says he did not “know” he had to include items as income – PLEASE – THIS SENT ME INTO A RAGE. And, you’re right, the fact he was confirmed is part of that “good ole boy” club – you don’t sweep under my doorstep and I won’t sweep under yours. Frankly, I am disgusted with the whold bunch. I am thinking of just quitting work myself and letting the government take care of me – I pay a big chunk in taxes every year and they are wasting my money! Okay, I feel better now.

Jerry – Thank you for your thoughtful post. I’m so grateful for all this country provides low and middle income families. As a person who has worked all her life, has a masters-degree, pays taxes and raises children,my family and I still fall below the poverty line. I have had to use WIC vouchers and despite a full time job for a reputable company for which at least one of my degrees was an important pre-requisite, my children still qualify for free lunch and reduced after-school services. While money is often wasted despite all our best efforts (in my own home and in others as well, I suspect) I think the United States has and will continue to look first at the best interest of all its citizens. I know there are exceptions – but I still believe this is the intention of most of our civic servants – elected or otherwise. For this I am grateful. For this my family and I benefit. It’s wonderful to hear that some are so properous that they do not need the level of support that some of us require. I hope one day I can be among their ranks and when I am … I hope I will remember what it feels like to use a wic voucher – the mix of shame and gratitude is something I carry with me. Thank you for paying your taxes. I am deeply grateful. For the most part, I do not think they are wasted.

Um, unfortunatley the Obama appointeed did not pay their back taxes and penalties years ago–they did it after or as they were being named to the Cabinet. One presumes that had their names never come up they’d have never paid up.

Like too many Americans who think nothing of bending tax rules to garner a larger refund. At least until they’re caught.

Think of the $ the government would make if they could catch all the folks that tweek their taxes. We just might have a surplus again.
